Glazed, Filled or Beignet: The Secret to the Perfect Donut
There’s a reason people light up when they open a Dr. Dough box. The perfect donut is equal parts texture, flavour and that first-bite moment of happiness. But what actually makes a donut perfect?
Let’s dive into the world of glazes, fillings and everything in between.
What Makes a Donut “Perfect”?
It starts with the dough. Every Dr. Dough donut begins with a soft, fluffy yeast dough that’s light enough to melt in your mouth, but sturdy enough to hold toppings, fillings and icing without collapsing.
We proof our donuts until they reach just the right level of pillowy rise, then fry them golden brown — never greasy, never dense. The result? A base so good it could be eaten un-glazed (but we rarely let it go naked). (Editor notes: I (Tom) eat them naked all the time. They are actually so so so good.)
Glazed Donuts: The Classic Everyone Craves
Glazed donuts are the heartbeat of any good donut box. A thin, glossy coating of sweet glaze gives them that irresistible shine and slight crackle when you bite in.
Our classic glaze is smooth, rich and just the right amount of sweet, made to enhance the donut, not drown it. It’s the canvas for every colour, topping and drizzle we use.
Whether it’s a pastel pink for birthdays or a chocolate glaze for the ultimate comfort fix, the glaze is where the magic begins.
Filled Donuts: The Hidden Treasure
Some donuts are born to surprise. Filled donuts take things to the next level with a creamy centre. Our Jam donuts comes as it is, but we also dress it up to create our Lamington donut!
Each one is hand-filled to order, so you get that perfect balance of soft dough and rich filling without overdoing it. They’re indulgent, messy in the best way, and always worth the extra napkin.
Unglazed Donuts: Simple, Soft & Seriously Underrated
Sometimes, less really is more. An unglazed donut highlights the craft, the texture, the flavour of the dough, the delicate outer crisp from frying.
Our yeast-raised donuts are so light that they can stand alone, unglazed and still absolutely delicious. These are the donuts that show off the skill behind every batch.
Beignets: The French Cousin
Beignets are the chic Parisian cousin of the donut, square, fluffy, and covered in a snowy layer of icing sugar.
While you’ll find them at cafés in New Orleans and street stalls in Paris, they share the same DNA as our donuts: soft dough, golden crust, and that irresistible “just one more” energy.
Should Dr. Dough offer beignets?!
